Yes. “Dumpster” actually started as a brand name, not as the generic name for a large garbage container.
The word comes from the Dempster-Dumpster, a waste container/loading system developed by the Dempster Brothers company in Knoxville, Tennessee, around the 1930s. “Dumpster” was a combination of Dempster + dump. The picture above is an early dumpster truck. Believe it or not, they actually still use this type of system down at the EX !!!!!!!
Over time, the brand became so widely used that people began calling almost any large waste container a dumpster, similar to how certain brand names become everyday words.
Eventually, Dempster developed compaction systems for the waste industry.
Fun fact- our father bought his first compaction waste disposal truck in 1967 from Dempster and it was delivered from Knoxville. The unit was number 18. It was a cab over Ford single axle front-end loader. I spent many days in the side saddle riding out to Beare Rd Landfill. Which currently is the funny looking mountain located east of the Zoo.
I will always remember that on the door of unit 18 was a hand painted sign, “Owned and Operated by H.M. Richards and Sons.”
